Nortel Networks and EMC Align to Deliver Optically-Networked Storage SolutionsLeaders To Extend Benefits of Storage Solutions Across Metro, Wide Area Networks for Enterprises, Service Providers

BOSTON, May 15, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSE:NT.), the
global leader in optical networking, and EMC Corporation, the world leader in
information storage, today announced they have formed an alliance to provide
best-in-class, optically-networked storage solutions. These solutions, designed
to extend the benefits of mission critical storage networking over campus, metro
and wide area systems, can yield cost savings and improved efficiencies for
enterprises and enable new service opportunities for service providers.

As part of the alliance, Nortel Networks and EMC are collaborating on
development, testing, and marketing of open, standards-based solutions that will
be focused on breaking through technological barriers associated with
connectivity and extend the reach of storage networks. These solutions will be
based on Nortel Networks leading OPTera Metro multiservice platform and EMC's
market-leading information storage systems and software.

"The focus on highly-integrated, optically-networked storage solutions will
position large enterprises to easily and cost-effectively deploy storage
solutions over campus, metro and wide area networks, and will enable service
providers to introduce new services to address the exploding demand for remote
information storage," said William P. Hurley, program manager, E-Networks &
Broadband Access, the Yankee Group in Boston, MA. "Nortel Networks and EMC are
leveraging their leadership positions in high reliability optical networks and
information management capabilities to create optically-networked storage
    solutions today."

"Our alliance with EMC is a key step for Nortel Networks to bring the value of
storage to metropolitan areas and beyond," said Brian McFadden, president, Metro
Optical Networks, Nortel Networks. "These integrated solutions will be designed
to enable the consolidation of storage facilities in the metro and wide area
networks, providing greater efficiencies, lower costs, and improve users access
to information. For service providers, these solutions will offer additional
revenue opportunities and competitive differentiation through managed
information storage solutions, hosted CRM (customer relationship management) and
    other managed services and applications."

EMC and Nortel Networks have tested Nortel Networks CRM applications with an
optically-networked storage infrastructure as an example of an application that
can realize significant benefits from the combined technologies.

"By creating an optically-enabled network that supports fast and reliable
delivery of information, we will be giving customers the tools to deploy new
revenue-generating applications, while reducing operational costs. These
solutions are qualified and tested, and can be deployed today," said Bill
Nelson, senior vice president, Content and Information Center Markets, EMC.
"Both companies are committed to providing joint customer support to provide a
single-point of contact that allows customers to tailor storage solutions to
    meet their specific business objectives."

The alliance also includes collaboration on marketing initiatives, including a
joint presentation at the upcoming executive seminar series "Information at the
Speed of Light," to highlight next-generation, optically-enabled, storage
networking solutions. This seven-city seminar tour is scheduled to commence May
30, 2001 and will take place throughout North America. To learn more about the
