It is semi-annual. It has never been paid in February. Until 2006 it was paid the last business day of June and December when it was shifted to the first business day of July and January except in 2011 when it was not paid until January 14. Due to unpredictable tax changes a number of businesses are paying their dividends a bit early this year moving to the end of December from January and I was hoping that Teck would do likewise but it is a Canadian company so worrying about United States shareholders is apparently not a priority. Between July 2008 and July 2010 dividends were suspended. Teck has also been through two 2 for 1 stock splits a couple of times.
One of the factors that must be considered in having a stock like Teck with a dividend in mind is that the declared dividend is in Canadian dollars and must be converted to $US for us lving in USA so the amount actually depends upon the exchange rate at the time the dividend is paid. The dollar has ranged from virtually at par to $1.03 so you cannot predict the amount that you will actually get until the pay date. We did not do too bad this round--the exchange rate was 1.0137 but it would have been nicer if it was at par and we got the actual amount of the declared payout.
