What was Coca Cola's reasoning then to do an 2-1 stock split? While they have been repurchasing shares to reward executives, it would allow them room to grow without having to add any additional shares for capitalization and since they have good cash flow, that is not always going to be the case. Home Depot would allow newer investors an opportunity to get in at lower prices and those long term holders would be allowed to take an profit and amazingly pay higher taxes perhaps with the new rates for 2013. Wouldn't surprize me if this isn't on the BOD's mind to plan to do this and hope that the housing market will continue to grow which will be an plus for HD! Of course if the bubble burst then no need to do an split and that may be one of the worries or perhaps they see what is currently happening to AAPL? Surely they are not that naive?
