DULUTH, Minn. – Northshore Mining Co., which operates a 47-mile private railroad from its taconite mine at Babbitt and a processing plant at Silver Bay, Minn., is leasing three GE ES44ACs for a four-month period. Silver Bay is about 50 miles northeast of Duluth.
The units are leased from Citicorp Railmark Incorporated and were prepared for movement at Mid-America Car in Kansas City, Mo. The three units are CREX Nos. 1201, 1203, and 1204. The units were shipped via BNSF Railway to Superior, Wis., where they were interchanged to Canadian National. CN moved them to its interchange with Northshore at Norshor Jct. where they arrived Aug. 3. After installation of radios at Northshore shop in Babbitt, the units will be put on service hauling ore trains this week.
The company is owned by Cliffs Natural Resources, which also owns Michigan’s Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad. LS&I has leased GE AC44CWs as its road power for several years.
