China is the largest market in the world for new air conditioners and refrigerators. There are 300 manufacturers of air conditioners in China. There are 30 automobile manufacturers. All of this from a recent report by the firm of Sanford Bernstein & Co.
Some other info. China is estimated to have 236,000 millionaires, more than Canada's 200,000. There are 130 million Chinese with income of more than $14,000 per year -- middle-class, on a purchasing power parity basis, and more than the population of Japan, or the combined population of France and the UK. And they all want cars, so figure the future oil demand!
I will attempt to e-mail a copy of the report to you.
a couple of questions
"There are presently 20 million cars in China."
What kind? manufacturer, model, age, type?
"What about appliances for homes; what is hot, who makes them, etc
Just looking for insight and opportunity..
Offshore(Gulf also) is where all the exploration is supposed to be happening. I sold all my oil service holdings based on what I thought were high valuations at the end of last year. I really have no idea if earnings will come in to support current share prices.
Cal Dive (CDIS) is a small player in the Gulf I thought was interesting about a year ago. However I did not buy any so of course the share price doubled.
Not touting SOSA but find it very interesting...tankers are still holding me afloat :)

I looked at Stolt a couple of years ago when it was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and chickened out: too bad. I don't know that I would rush in now. I still look at it fom time to time, but the more it rises, the more cautious I get.
You might want to take a look at Trinidad Energy Services trust (it's Canadian) for a comparison.
