Speedy has been struggling with gift ideas for Jane Wayne until Saturday when it fell into place. Jaime, the caretakes at Everglades Acres, had shot some nuisance alligators with his crossbow. They were threatening his banty chickens which run free during the day and are cooped at night. These were juvenile gators about 3 feet long and he shot 3 of them..
When I showed up Saturday, Jaime was skinning them and Jane was watching. I remarked that this size gator was about big enough for one loafer.
When you get a nuisance gator you are supposed to call Florida Fish and Game to come relo it or kill it if its more than 6 feet. But how stupid is that to relo a gator who is already in the glades? So Jaime just shot them in the head. A practical solution.
When Jane heard the loafer remark she said she wanted a pair of alligator loafers. She has seen my gator boots and knows how cool they are.
So what was I going to say except yes. This means I have to haul the hides to the tanner and then to the bootmaker in Miami (with a tracing of her feet) to get the loafers made. This is a lot of effort and cost but she is worth it and that will be her gift. The hides are being brined now.
And Jaime and his people ate the gator meat deep fried and the banty chickens are safe. Everyone wins except the gators.
That's life here in SW Florida except one of my fishing buddies got a 24" pompano at Wiggins last week. He said it was an African pompano, not the usual Florida variety. He also caught a 16" Florida pompano I saw just a while ago.
