Riding on the City of New Orleans next weekend for 2 day stay in the Crescent City at the Pontchartrain Hotel. I know it will be hot and muggy, but got great deals on train and hotel. Not going to rent a car; just ride taxis and the St. Charles streetcar.
I have been getting itchy feet since wife and I returned from Italy and Med. cruise in late June. There is only so much stock trading and message board posting one can do, before it all gets boring.
I think it is going to be a hoot. I plan to do a lot of drinking in the lounge car on the train. Train dining should be good. We'll take Metra from Libertyville to Union Station.
This Winter I'm thinking of taking the Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago to West Coast, but I would go 1st Class, with a bedroom, bath, and shower. I think it would be great to look out over the frozen tundra from warmth and comfort of train car.
Snug-In Memphis stay at Peabody, watch the Duck March at 1700.Then cross the steet in the alley is Charlie Vergas' Rendezvous best ribs ever.Persh,Justine's was good but black chef died.
Rum Boogie Cafe serves food, but it isn't great. What we have liked is the usually 10 piece band playing Motown. They have the old STAX Record Studio sign over the bandstand. We have never yet paid a cover charge, because we always entered just before 8:00PM. Shortly after that they start collecting a cover charge. Drinks are reasonable, and we have always gotten a table just off dance floor in front of band. Only food I remember as being memorable was the Key Lime pie. Wife usually gets that just before we leave. We always stay at Holiday Inn or Comfort Inn downtown, so we take the streetcar to/from Beale St, and I don't get a ticket for DUI. Snug
The first serious restuarant meal I remember is with my family in the Caribbean Room when we were staying at the Pontchartrain Hotel. I even remember what I had... Trout Alamidine. We then caught a ship to Havana, the S.S, Atlantica. What a wonderful trip you will be having.
