Cover those short positions today...
From an investment standpoint, I would think the spin-off will allow AbbVie to focus more on research, creating much more potential for growth in other areas. Addditionally, do not forget Abbott the other branch of the company, which will no longer be tied to the risk of drugs not being approved and will actually benefit from expired patents.
I see this as a win-win situation with both companies positioning themselves for rapid stock growth.
