It's all about Mariano's....... Wisconsin doesn't seem to matter

Can the Mariano stores in Illinois hold up the rest of the company? From what I hear and read, Mariano stores are the ones in the "lime light." Never hear any "good news" about P/S. All negative news in the Milw. area. One might think as Mariano picks up more momentum he could break away from Roundy's, leaving them to fight for their own. After all this was always his dream. Oconomowoc warehouse is working 7 days a week, with overtime at a record high. Roundy's and W/S have to be making a fortune.

    • I think the fortune has been made. You sound like the employee I interviewed today. One thing we talked about was all the negative talk and the low morale. Totally different in Chicago, good morale, lots of excitement, and if you know people in Chicago, they are very upbeat about the stores. But talk to the investors, well not so upbeat. Wisconsin does matter because that is the money tree to fund new stores. So it will be carefully managed to produce maximum short term results. Obviously once Walmart, Meijer, Woodmans, Costco, HyVee and others are fully operational, its going to be rough but hopefully Chicago will be cash flowing by then.

      • Dead right. Milwaukee and Chicago are different markets. In general, Milwaukee wants the likes of Walmart and Meijer -- which is The Next Thing -- and not really the Pick and Save, etc. Even if Roundy's upgrades, people want the Meijer and Walmarts. Milwaukee isn't buying into Metro Market.

Roundy's should sell off the Wisconsin and Minnesota locations to the likes of Meier and Walmart for their smaller "Fresh Market" format and concentrate on Chicago and Mariano's. Mariano's is the star of Chicago retail right now. It's where Roundy's is white hot and where they should focus.

      • Wisconsin does not matter. I.E. this morning. I ran to Cermak for a number of items needed for the playoff due to Roundy's prices and less quality. My wife left at the same time since she likes the local Roundy's crapfest. I drove roughly 25 miles round trip and beat her home by 30 minutes due to the "backup checking out" with her calling me several times asking me to get things that she gave up on from the deli, etc. The only hope for this chain is that Wisconsin folks keep dealing with the poor service while Chicago gets subsidized. When chairman boobs namesake gets spun off to the current manglement and everything else is a huge loss.....
