    Algalin is the new Whey!

Goozle, you're missing the point -- Algalin is the new Whey!

Whey has a global market value of $5 billion. If this new protein Algalin/Almagine that Solazyme owns is positioned right (marketing the benefits and advantages in the proper channels) it can easily move to taking at least a 50% share of the whey market.

The only plant-protein blend comparable to whey protein in amino acid balance and density
"Nearly identical to the one scoop of our original PlantFusion protein shake. It carries all of the features of the original; it’s multi-source, contains raw plant proteins, is free of common allergens, is easily digestible and tastes great. The only plant-protein blend comparable to whey protein in amino acid balance and density."

So will the Plant Fusion deal itself be valuable? No. But it represents the entry into a $5 billion market, which should be celebrated.

And yes, this does include protein shakes (large revenues when looking at whey) but also includes so much more. Yes, General Mills and Kraft too will be wanting this, so don't worry. Will the public demand algal oils? Perhaps not. Yet it's very feasible that if popularity develops that they will demand "Algalin" will arise (just like whey). When positioned and marketed against whey the proposition value is worth billions.

Maybe you don't see the significance of this "first launch". It's small, I can attest to that. But it's huge at the same time. The whey market and this product launch means SOMETHING. Seriously. It means SOMETHING to Algalin/Almagine.

Solazyme's whole algal protein is a vegan whole-food source, microalgae-derived, non-allergenic, and naturally rich in fiber, healthy lipids, and micronutrients. It has a neutral flavor profile that can be incorporated easily into products for protein fortification, and is a complete functional food containing at least 50 percent protein by weight and 15-20 percent dietary fiber.

"We see the launch of the CleanSeries Veggie Protein Powder as a clear indicator of market demand for our algal based protein ingredient," said Jean-Marc Rotsaert, Chief Operating Officer, Solazyme. "The market has never been stronger for a new source of quality protein that matches the emerging consumer demands and we look forward to continuing to innovate food ingredient solutions through our revolutionary platform."

Twinlab CleanSeriesSports Nutrition, one of Twinlab's latest innovations, is a series unlike any other: it contains no artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, or parabens, is part of NSF's Tested & Certified program. It is further batch-tested for banned substances as part of HFL's Informed Sport Program.

"CleanSeries represents a new standard in sports nutrition, helping us serve athletes in search of "clean" supplements that don't sacrifice performance for peace of mind," said Marc Stover, Twinlab's Director of Marketing. "Solazyme's pure algal protein is truly a breakthrough whole food ingredient and we strongly believe there will be wide market adoption of the Veggie Protein Powder based on the qualities this new ingredient brings to it."

    • Speaking of protein drinks, check out MusclePharm (MSLP)-- $4 to 8.78 in 2 months. They don't use Algalin though--yet.

      Sentiment: Strong Buy

    • I take Muscle Milk daily. I'm not a bodybuilder but do exercise and workout regularly. It's important to keep the Amino Acid Pool balanced and this whey based product is an important part of my nutrition and fitness regimen to keep fit, lean, strong and healthy. They can also call it brain milk as it also supplies necessary nutrients for your cognitive functions.

A 2.47 lbs jar of muscle milk has a suggested retail price of $48.49, compared to the 2.00 lbs jar of Phood. So retail price is a bit cheaper and I do buy Muscle Milk with standard discounts.

Would assume that as the algalin product starts to penetrate more protein powders and competes with whey, the price point will begin to drop as competition yields to discounting.

Dietary protein must first be broken down into peptide fragments. This breakdown is accomplished in the stomach, by pepsin, and in the small intestine, by chymotrypsin and tyrpsin (pancreatic enzymes).

These peptide fragments now must be broken down into free amino acids (not linked to other amino acids). This breakdown is accomplished by aminopeptidase, located on epithelial cells of the small intestine, and carboxypeptidase, from the pancreas.

The now free amino acids are carried into the epithelial cells by secondary active transport coupled with sodium. Short chains of amino acids, di- or tripeptides, can be absorbed by secondary active transport coupled to the hydrogen ion (H+) gradient. There are different transporters for specific amino acids. Once in the epithelial cell, these small peptides are hydrolyzed (broken down) into amino acids. Both types of absorption require ATP. Next the free amino acids enter the blood through a facilitated diffusion carrier in the cell membrane. These amino acids in the blood and extracellular fluids make up a large group called the amino acid pool. This pool also contained amino acids that were catabolized from other tissues. Amino acids are constantly entering and leaving this pool.

    • This product is to expensive.
In order to take market share away from Whey it should be about $10 a tub cheaper but its retailing at $54.95.
AND it should be an Isolate, which would allow for better absorption of the protein.
The product looks good but I don't like their price point to start..... Whey protein has increased in price substantially in the past 2 years...... it would wake up the market if a great brand/new product with price point entered the fray.

      PlantFusion vs. Whey
When PlantFusion is compared to whey protein in amino acid content, it makes a very good impression. PlantFusion is higher in some amino acids and not as high in others, but the overall trend is a strong similarity. PlantFusion is particularly high in arginine, glycine, histidine and phenylalanine compared to whey protein. For the many individuals who have dairy food allergies and/or lactose intolerance, PlantFusion is much easier to digest than whey. It causes no distress to the digestive system.
      PlantFusion vs. Soy
Compared to soy protein, PlantFusion has an excellent amino acid profile and much higher nutritional value. PlantFusion is higher in the key amino acids: arginine, glycine, leucine and isoleucine, and is significantly higher in histidine. For the many individuals who have soy food allergies or intolerance, PlantFusion is much easier to digest. It causes no distress to the digestive system.
      Vegetarian/Vegan
The high biological value of the 100% plant-sourced protein of PlantFusion provides all the essential amino acids and is perfectly suited for those following a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle to acquire a multi-sourced, high quality protein. And it will not cause intestinal distress like many soy products.
      Athletes & Bodybuilders
Athletes who are looking to ensure optimal protein intake without sacrificing hard earned muscle will find PlantFusion as the perfect solution. The high biological value of PlantFusion, along with high levels of branched-chain amino acids and L-glutamine will help any athlete maintain lean muscle mass and limit body fat. And athletes can avoid the discomfort of intestinal bloating that is normally associated with dairy and soy products.

Correction: The TOTAL Whey markets are valued at over USD $7 billion are forecasted to approx. USD 8.5 billion in 2015. I'd be happy is Algalin took just 20% of the market!

Whey powder, whey proteins and whey protein fractions represent a global market value of approx. USD 7.2 billion in 2011, more than 20% higher than in 2010 given higher prices, and are forecasted to approx. USD 8.5 billion in 2015, corresponding to a CAGR of 4% at constant prices.

17 Aug 2012 --- Whey and lactose ingredients continue to show positive growth rates in volume and value terms, although prices have weakened for most products in 2012 compared to 2011, according to a new report on whey and lactose products from 3A Business Consulting.

“It is tempting to say that demand for whey and lactose just keeps growing, irrespective of significant price volatility over the last 5 years and the relative poor performance of the global economy”, says Tage Affertsholt, Partner of 3A Business Consulting.

For the forecast period 2012-2015 the assessment is that the whey industry should be able to keep up with demand by undertaking new investments in capacity and technology and by better utilization of the raw material available.

USD 7.2 billion in 2011, more than 20% higher than in 2010 given higher prices, and are forecasted to approx. USD 8.5 billion in 2015, corresponding to a CAGR of 4% at constant prices. Also remember this

"Acting Chairman Sears asked who would be SRN's customers. Mr. Billig stated that the customers would include Sears, General Mills, ConAgra, Cadbury, Hershey and Kraft. It was asked what product these customers were using now. Mr. Billig stated that the present sources of protein are whey and soy. He further stated that the product lipid is a new entity and SRN is in the process of convincing customers that they could use SRN's products instead of using eggs, cream and butter. He stated that this product would cost less and fewer products could be used to achieve the same type of functional use."

I still don't understand "Sears" (I know everyone keeps talking about their food business but I don't get it). I do get General Mills, ConAgra, Cadbury, Hershey and Kraft. For these customers Algalin is the new whey (and new soy).

The world’s two largest dairy companies - Nestlé and Danone - are not really actual whey producers; they are however major users of whey and lactose ingredients.

The nutritional sectors including infant formula, clinical nutrition and sports nutrition products are mainly responsible for the strong growth in the high-end protein ingredients. For the lactose product group, high growth is apparent for permeate, but also for standard lactose, pharmaceutical lactose and galactooligosaccharides.

EU-27 and the US are the major markets for whey products, whereas Asia is rapidly approaching the top spot for lactose and permeate. For the 2012-2015 period, the Asian region including China will present the highest growth both in absolute and relative terms. EU-27 and the US are also the largest producers of whey and lactose products, with the US showing a stronger growth rate than the EU. In terms of export, the US has also moved into the number one position, according to 3A Business Consulting.
