Tim Cook of Apple meeting with China Mobile's Chairman
I heard on CNBC today that Tim Cook was meeting with the Chairman of China Mobile today. They said the two key issues were the homegrown network of China Mobile and the profit sharing model Apple gets with most carriers.
Does anyone have an opinion on whether this is good or bad for SQNS in the event Apple strikes up a partnership with China Mobile? To date, I am not aware of any SQNS/ Apple activity and I wonder if this will take away from their addressable market. However, China Mobile has the largest number of subscribers in China, so even if Apple took a chunk and SQNS did not participate in this, I suppose it would not hurt too much.
Anyway, if anyone has any insights on the topic I am curious to read your opinions.
It seems to me that mobile phones aren't that big a part in the business in china, also not everyone buys or can afford apple products. I believe there are still designs wins to be announced though and maybe one of those is a phone? It will all unfold in the next 6 months, I'm sure.
When Apple gains market share, it creates demand for high performance products.
Every smartphone maker will follow into the footsteps, and a strong demand for 4G baseband chip will emerge.
In the US Verizon sells phones from Apple, HTC, RIM Blackberry, Nokia, Samsung, ...
Apple is no threat to Sequans business in China. As I understand it iphones don't work very well on China Mobile's network. Price too is an issue, most Chinese don't make enough to buy an iphone. Apple's going to have to start giving them away if it hopes to make a dent in that market. Sequans is also in 'the internet of things' business and I imagine that;s where they compete best against companies like Qualcomm. We will have to wait and see what the mix re: devices is when they start announcing specific product wins.
