The General Petraeus Thing: Why Sex and Scandal Need a Divorce
Here's the thing: I don't care AT ALL who my leaders sleep with in the privacy of their own homes. I don't care what they do and I don't care who they do it with. I might be envious, but I certainly won't be mad.
I don't care if my President's doing an intern (during the Monica Lewinsky thing, my line was always "the President of the United States should be allowed to bang anybody he wants, period."). I don't care if my Senator's doing a page or if my Congressman's secretly doing his chief of staff.
And I certainly don't care if our Generals are getting a little somethin' somethin' on the side.
Wanna know why? Because none of it has anything to do with their job, the job I've hired them or the President's hired them to do for this country. And if it doesn't detract from their job, then it's none of our business.
General Petraeus is an indispensable soldier. He was handed Iraq when it was a complete mess, and he guided it to an acceptable outcome. Then he was given Afghanistan where again he was met with spiraling casualty numbers and again he got them under control and put us in a position where we can be home and done by the end of 2014.
He follows that up by running the CIA for 15 months, and then, what?
Some poison ivy chick and her friend manage to do what the combined forces of Iraqi and Afghani insurgents couldn't and get him removed from the War on Terror?
That equation doesn't balance. Those two socialites aren't worth the shoes they walk around in, yet somehow they've managed to weaken my country by removing one of its most outstanding military leaders?!?
Surely, I'm not the only one who thinks that's nuts, right?
Slayer, good point about the way the FBI handled it: what a mess. If they'd proceeded more professionally, there had to be a way this thing could've been handled quietly, without Petraeus having to resign.
You're also right that the poison ivy chick, maybe both chicks, will subject General Petraeus to a renewed round of humiliation and media attention when she publishes and promotes some tell-all book she's probably already writing.
Absolutely, I agree 100%. What happened to the good old days when they would keep their mouths shut? Either way though, people like this crap, it makes money. That's why they play it 24/7 and some females know they can get paid WELL if they come forward and tell the world they have been sleeping with a married man of power. Who can blame him, his wife is horrific I am sorry, I thought for sure it was his mother. I dont even think she blames him.
The terrorist are rethinking things in their tents. Suicide bombings, IED's none of that stuff does the damage as building an army of hotties to infiltrate and sleep with the most powerful men of the United States.
I also agree about the wife. She broke the unwritten code that wives need to keep it tight. When that unspoken deal is violated, all she has the right to expect is that his attitude will be: "Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies."
