For the vast majority of Americans these are not the good ol' days. Quality of life is not about how fast your computer runs but it is about your lifestyle and sense of security. For most families, both parents must now work and often more than 1 job each. People are losing good jobs and needing to take low paying service jobs often without health and other benefits (thank you NAFTA). Parents have less time to raise their children.
If you happen to be a dishonest CEO paid $ millions/year these are indeed great times. For most people, these are not good times.
Try to remember that the average wage in the US is $32,000/year and imagine how a large fraction of the population is trying to raise a family on that.
