Ok, so if I own the AGNC on 3/21 and then sell it on 3/22 do I still get paid dividend on 4/27? Technically you need to own stock ONLY one day to get this return. Who is that possible?
If you buy it at 3:59 on Friday and sell on the opening on Monday you will get the dividend.
All you have to do is own on the close on day before ex-date.
The monday price will be taken down by 1.40 pre open
Whatever happens after that is a supply/demand thing
Google ex dividend info
Don't get all caught up with the record date, if you own on ex date -am you then own on record date automatically
What does the Ex-dividend Date mean?
The ex-dividend date is the day on which all shares bought and sold no longer come attached with the right to be paid the most recently declared dividend. This is an important date for any company that has many stockholders, including those that trade on exchanges, as it makes reconciliation of who is to be paid the dividend easier. It is just as important for investors, however, since you must own a stock before the ex-dividend date in order to receive the next scheduled dividend.
Prior to this date, the stock is said to be cum dividend ("with dividend"): existing holders of the stock and anyone who buys it will receive the dividend, whereas any holders selling the stock lose their right to the dividend. On and after this date the stock becomes ex dividend ("without dividend"): existing holders of the stock will receive the dividend even if they now sell the stock, whereas anyone who now buys the stock now will not receive the dividend.
WRONG! If you buy on fri. and sell on mon. you will NOT get divi.!!The trade has to settle.(2-3days)HOWEVER if you OWN AGNC.(settled) on fri and sell on MON. you WILL get the divi.If do not BELIEVE do the REASEARCH!!!
on friday and sell on monday, you will get the divvie, but likely lose at least that much and likely MORE in prinipal. Record date is 2 business days after MONDAY so buys today DO DEFINITELY QUALIFY FOR THE DIVVIE...Secondly, learn now the spell 'research' OKAY????
No, Monday is the ex-div date (the first day the stock trades ex-dividend, without the right to collect the dividend). The record date is Wednesday. If you hold the stock through Friday evening, and sell Monday morning, your broker will delay settlement for three days, or until Thursday morning, making you the shareholder of record at close on Wednesday night. That will make you the recipient of the dividend payment, which will be paid into your account on April 27, which is also a Wednesday.
He said sell the day after xd (monday), if they were going to announce an spo right after that would be monday after hours, after he had sold. I don't think any mreit has ever announced an spo after hours on xd, the closest I've seen is NLY who announced it in after hours the day after xd.
My major issue with buying friday just to sell on mon morning is that you are essentially giving them a short term loan and wont have that money for a month, not a major issue and being long I don't mind, but for a quick flip I would prefer to avoid.
That is a rule of thumb, not set in stone. There is no set rule that it will open on monday down 1.4, it is market driven. So, as you have seen on here all the talk of selling on friday and buying on monday, what do you think the market will do? If this occurs the pps will dip fri afternoon and first thing on monday it will likely open down ~1.4 due to people thinking that is the "new price" but at open there will be high demand (people who sold on friday and rebuying or new investors) and low supply (due to few people who will sell the day after xd) so the pps IMO will have a nice run, maybe close mon or tues just 1.00 or so below the close on friday. This is tough to say because the relatively low amount of people on these boards and maybe other boards (never looked for another one though) may have their own consensus thinking that buying fri and selling mon will be the best option.
To answer the OP's question though, to get the divi you have to own the stock by friday and sell on/after monday, so essentially if you have shares in your account over the weekend you get the div
