That because there is a big tendancy to spend what you make vice saving some if any of it. From the time I started working, I was forced to put money in savings. When I was no longer forced, I had knowledge and will power to put aside 10 percent. Doing this all along doesn't hurt a bit -- it's money you never had and you only miss it when you have it. See if someone makes 22K and gets by, then clearly someone that makes 25K can put away 3K and still get by.
I had to use some trickery at times. I used an out-of-state bank because it was harder to get at -- trust me, there is temptation. At one point I increased savings by amount of raises for several years. I had my ups and downs -- I dumped all into one fail safe investment -- learned that lesson.
I don't buy it that people can't save because most of my life I made under 25k a year and saved and invested. FWIW, I do make a good income now (and save little too), but point is savings is a disciplin and most really don't have it, or at least don't apply it. I hear whines from people that have basically nothing yet have a far greater income then I. Sure, I will agree that saving in a bank isn't an investment, but it is a start, was my start, and people need to do it as you have to have money to make money ... and it's not how much money, but simply how you apply it.
I think it is less than a lot think. Then you consider purchasing power over the past decade and shoot....see link..it is a few years old...
Day's Range was 28.00 - 28.60 so getting at 27.99, well that is tough esoecially those numbers! Last time I hit a bottom like that, I only picked up 25 shars out of the whole block (wouldn't have picked up any if "all or none"!). Think I'll have to call it how I see it...
Savings have only recently polked it's head above zero to 2% in this country, even with the median national household income being 55k. I've been playing catch up over the past 15 years. 5 kids, college, etc. I can't imagine a family making 25k being able to put as much as you suggest away. If they could they should run for Congress ;-)
