    OT...$$$...Other Preferred Ideas

    Hi Everyone,

Well, I thought I had reviewed every Preferred stock and ETF and ETN known this past weekend, but I still keep finding more. Here are a few that might warrant further inspection.

These are Nuveen Preferreds...JPC(7.7%), and JPI(8%).

These are other Preferreds FFC(8%), and FLC(8%)

I have previously mentioned PFXF and SPFF, two new Preferreds, both with forward yields of just under 8%.

I also am considering a non Preferred stock, which I think many here own...GGN(can you tell us about your experience?) It is a closed end gold fund which invests 80% in companies dealing with the gold industry and 20% in companies engaged in natural resources. Its current yield is over 10% and pays monthly. Its last dividend was reduced for the first time since Yahoo's reporting in 2007.

Why not margin all of these and make twice the yield? Oh, I heard someone say, twice the risk...;-)

I want a stable security which will weather storms and still pay a high yield....these I have listed, together with all of the mReit Preferreds(well maybe not NLY or IVR ) I think, fit the bill...

I wish us all good luck,

    • FFC does look pretty good...nice distribution...chart looks pretty good, but it sold off by $.41 today...this is a huge one-day drop...I hope this spells opportunity. I'm going to wait a day or so to see what happens here...I am looking to replace PCN in my income portfolio. PCN was a nice stock to own, but the market value was exceeding NAV by over 10%....time to look elsewhere.

    • Hey Doc, thanks for mentioning GGN. I myself am thinking a lot about it. I'm doing my research on it. A fund that I have always liked is DHY which pays around 9% a year and it's invested in diversified portfolio of high yield junk bonds. I'm kind of liking GGN much better : )

      Sentiment: Strong Buy

      • Congrats X on getting close to the million on your excellent timing on the EPD trade. Talk about getting out at the right time. Knock on my head next time and tell me to sell when you do...;-)

Hey, look at NCV and FSC also. If you trade them from the 9th trading day post EX to the ff day B4 EX you almost double your yield, esp on it out. I am buying tomorrow as it is the 9th day after last EX, and look at FSC's position on a chart....sweet.

        Best to you X,

    • Doc,
As risky as this may sound to you, when I bought all my bank corps and Prefs as extremely high yields, I funded alot of it with my home equity line of credit on my home. ( prime-0.50 = 2.75%)
I was earning 8-9% and paying 2.75% so while the value of my house was going down , I was earning 6% spread on300k of my equity.

PS I have been paying down my HELOC with all of my dividend income and expect to be paid off by Mar 2013.

    • Another Gabelli fund is returning over 14% at present (GABUX) and has yet to cut its monthly distribution. The only note of caution is that both GGN and GABUX have a high percentage of ROC associated with their distributions.

    • Thanks Doc.
Wow, I guess I have must have put the reirement bug everyones ears here.
      Do the math,
How much income do I need annually to retire?
      Divide by 0.08
Thats how much you need invested in monthly or quarterly paying investments. assuming 8%
Price movement becomes less of an issue,
      Income, income, income.

    • Doc,

I sold my GLD shares a couple of years ago to buy the monthly income....pays the utilities. My investments are now 10% preferred stocks...ARR-A, ALLY-B. Sold all of my ARR, NLY, but keeping my core AGNC ($28.50 average). I am slowly moving assets to preferreds...probably another 10% over the next few years.
