    80 grit longboard paper....

Frank was the owner and the best boss anyone could have. He was totally laid back and a perfectionist. Every Bird had to be straight enough for Black. He worked in a separate building from painter John and myself, so we only saw him a couple times a day. He took the cars apart, put them on a rotisserie and when the body was painted, assembled everything to factory specs. Every Bird had a punch card that we would clock in on and he would bill the customer every two weeks. He came over one day and told me the bodyman before me had the bodies, skirts, continental kit etc, ready for primer in 98 hours and wondered why it took me 108 hours to beautify those bodies. i told him i had to have that extra cup of coffee or two each day, but in reality when you undressed those ladies, they were rough. Painter John would be waiting to cover them with PPG K-200 primer and then block them with 80 grit paper. 80 grit paper leaves ugly scratches in primer and i complained to him about using such coarse paper for the first blocking. He said "that's the way we always have done it". Even though we always used activated materials, you still didn't want to block it in 80 grit, but that fell on deaf ears and it was kind of a slap in the face. Big John was a good painter though. On occasion, he would start the day with a few hits of weed. One day he painted the roof on a 56 black, instead of white and Frank was "Hot". i don't know if the wacky tabacky was the reason, but if Frank knew what went down, Big John would have been down the road. Frank was THE T-BIRD MAN and was nationally known and every car rivaled Amos Minter in quality and beauty. Frank also had a couple F-Birds at the time, which was very cool....
