    Respectfully disagree with Schmidt

I live in Missouri and while I respect James
Schmidt very much, I would not put CBSH on a short list
of possible takeover candidates. They are doing too
well with significant Kemper family ownership to bail
at this point in time. However, as a solid,
modestly-priced financial that adds ballast to a portfolio
comprised of more volatile stocks, you can't beat

    This is a well-run, profitable, well-respected

    • Commerce is one of the last big banks left in the
midwest that has not been acquired, so I think they are
prime for takeover IF Kemper can get a high spot in the
takeover bank, I think he said a few years ago that this
was the case, so if the deal was right. As I recall,
his holdings is less than 25% so maybe the
shareholders have a bigger say so than you think.

      • ...considering recent takeover premiums for
financials (1.25x - 1.5x book), I think the acquirer would
have to make a VERY SWEET offer for a bank the quality
of Commerce for institutional shareholders to agree.
If it happens, fine - icing on the cake for
shareholders. If it doesn't, then we still own a great regional

I would rather look to Firstar (acquired
Mercantile) in a couple of years to be taken over as a solid
        Midwest franchise...
