Fortune magazine, in what it calls "the definitive report card on corporate reputations," ranks Wells Fargo the United States' "most admired" super regional bank for the second consecutive year. This year, Wells Fargo ranked 40th among all 535 companies from 63 industry segments in the survey, up from 55th for the new Wells Fargo last year. "To stay number one during the largest, most complex systems integration in banking history is something like the triple crown, an incredible achievement and a great credit to every single one of our team members," said J.L. Liftle, regional president of Wells Fargo Banks in Wisconsin and Illinois. "Now we want to go to the next stage and be known not just as America's most admired bank but as the most admired financial services company in America by continuing to provide our customers the best products and service anywhere."
In super regional banking, Wells Fargo ranked ahead of Firstar, FleetBoston, SunTrust Banks, PNC, US Bancorp, National City, Bank One, First Union and KeyCorp. In all categories, Wells Fargo ranked ahead of, among others: Alcoa, AFLAC, A.G. Edwards, AIG, Allstate, Bank of America, Best Buy, Boeing, CocaCola, Continental Airlines, DaimlerChrysler, Dell, Dow Chemical, Ford, Gap, General Mills, General Motors, Gillette, Hewlett-Packard, Hilton Hotels IBM, Johnson & Johnson, 3M, J.P. Morgan, Knight Ridder, McDonald's, Merck, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, Motorola, Nordstrom, Paine Webber, Sun Microsystems, Target, Time Warner, USAA, State Farm, St. Paul, Walgreen and Walt Disney.
For the survey, published in the Feb. 19 issue, Fortune asked 10,000 executives, directors and analysts to rate the nation's largest companies for innovation, quality of management, employee talent, financial soundness, use of corporate assets, long-term investment value, social responsibility and quality of products and services.
