Does anyone have info on the merger such as will the Vertis name go away. Has there been any layoffs or published plant closings. I would expect the direct mail people would be effected by some synergies. Hopefully nobody will loose their jobs.
Quad also acquired the former Quebecor gravure facility in Buffalo, NY. Soon after the acquisition, they announced the plant would be closing; 600 jobs lost. They not only closed the plant, they dismantled and scrapped the gravure equipment due to overcapacity in the market. They didn't want the plant, they wanted the accounts. Now there is some question as to what will happen with Vertis pensions, since they were underfunded. I would not put too much faith in the prospect of of a long career with Quad unless you are related to Harry. The industry as a whole has suffered significant decline and this will continue. Quad will do whatever it has to in order to survive - layoffs, closures, mergers, etc. Protect yourself and be sure you have another set of skills to offer than those required by the printing industry. Best of luck to you.
4 plants did not survive the transition and are closed or will be closing. Stevensville, North Brunswick, Dallas, Medina. Only the North Brunswick plant was direct mail. The others were inserts. New signage is going up fast. Outside signs went up the first day. Logos are being replaced. A lot of people will lose jobs before it is over. The union at Stevensville is suing as they did not get notice as required under Canadian law, but that is a Vertis Estate problem and does not involve Quad. Quad has set up a transition team that is bringing the Vertis folks into the process and the Quad way of doing things.
