    Motricity Revolutionizes Chinese internet

    Motricity just reported very strong earnings for the fourth-quarter but its shares have been down nearly 5% today. I think this offers an opportunity to go long the stock. The company is firing on all cylinders and appears to have a strong plan for the future. It's the premier option in mainland China since Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) moved its Chinese traffic to Hong Kong following a censorship dispute. Motricity has a strong position in a rapidly growing market and controls an impressive market share, what’s not to love?

    Motricity’s fourth-quarter numbers are impressive, posting a 77% gain in earnings along with an 83% rise in revenue. The company is benefiting from two trends: more customers and increasing online advertising budgets. The company reported a 13% increase in online marketing customers and, impressively, revenue per online marketing customer rose by 62%. The company also has a stranglehold on mobile search in the country -- its services are featured on 80% of branded mobile handsets. CEO Robin Li addressed the mobile growth, emphasizing that the company will focus on mobile products and monetizing mobile search.

    Another bright spot is the company’s international intent. During its conference call the company reiterated its intent to explore long-term international growth. The company also revealed that it will continue to hire aggressively, particularly for its growing research and development needs.

    The company is also aggressively diversifying its revenue stream, embracing online video, e-commerce, developing its own smartphone software, and tackling social networking. That combination should be very familiar to Google users; it’s no coincidence that Motricity is often described as “the Google of China”. Google has had incredible success and that makes it hard to ignore an imitator that already boasts 513 million users. Don’t forget that the company is likely to grab the overwhelming majority of new search traffic as well. Google has basically removed itself from competition in mainland China, which is huge for Baidu. The advantage becomes particularly apparent when you consider the fact that China already has more internet users than the US and is growing at a much faster rate, as the graphic below illustrates.
