I am very negative on Adobe. Basically Macromedia was acquired to preserve Adobe's market share for Acrobat (vs. Flash and Flashpaper) and to a lesser extent Photoshop (vs. Fireworks). A considerable amount of Macromedia's business was not incorporated directly into Adobe's revenues but simply discarded and canibalized to preseve, basically, the jobs of Adobe managers. By far the less innovative, less dynamic, less growth oriented company acquired the company with much better vision. Macromedia was a fatal threat to Adobe, therefore it was bought -- not to increase synergistic business opportunities, but, to simply preserve Acrobat and Photoshop marketshare, and, to whatever extent possible, as an afterthought, subsume as much of Marcomedia's previously threatening busness plans into whatever future Adobe may have. The primary purpose though, was not to significantly improve profits, just simply to remove Macromedia as a market threat -- at whatever the merger cost. 2 + 2 = 3, and as far as pre-merger Adobe was concerned, that was okay.
So where does the company go now?? What are its future growth markets?? Webdesign and image processing are already locked in. A complete monopoly. Fine, that is in the books -- but what can possibly fuel future growth? I've heard two markets mentioned: cell phones and the movement of documents to electronic formats.
Can someone explain how these two markets can possbily be growth oriented? Cell phones and iPods, online advertising, and such may be a growth market but one design studio working in Timbuktu on unregistered illegal copies of Adobe's products can create a single .swf file, sold to an advertsing firm for a few thousand dollars, broadcast to several millions of viewers. No where in this scenario does Adobe make any money. Best case scenario the .swf and .html pages were created with legal software. So what? They can be viewed by 2 million or 200 million persons -- it doesn't matter. Adobe only gets a few hundred dollars for the design software. It's ridiculous to think money is being made off increased cell phone usage. IS THAT THE MARKET???
As for electronic formating of paperwork -- much of this can be done without proprietary software. In fact, php and a slew of free robust third party apps can publish PDF files.
Vista will have native image processing capabilities which will easily obliterate Photoshop Elements -- GIMP is free....do you think Vista can't incorporate a mass market Windows version of GIMP?
Where will Adobe find growth??? I honestly just don't see it.
Steve Jobs is right, keep Adobe off of Apple. Flash is worst application ever to come to the internet. Flash itself is a great app, but used for advertising it gets a very bad name. I block it from all websites I visit since the ad's are usually abnoxious taking over my sound on my pc, and just not what we want to see or hear when reading a story online. I love Adobe the company, but when they picked up macromedia for Flash, it was the end of my support of Adobe.

Read my previous post..oh..btw what was the name of the ADVERTISING co that AAPL bought right after GOOG stole adMob right out from under AAPLs nose...
Ads monetize the web folks...! Adobe delivers ads and the best tools on the planet to do so !!
"If they start doing chinese versions, then they'll have to design and maintain a chinese site"
No, most of this repurposed junk would need to only to be translated. The televison analogy still holds. Adobe might sell a few more "cameras" for worldwide broadband rollout from current content providers but entirely new companies the size of Comedy Central are not created in the same proportion as new viewers subscribe to broadband services or download the Flash Player. There may be a roughly 1 to 1 increase in Cisco's sales as the number of internet users increases -- that is not at all the case with content content creators and the software they use. That should be obvious! Do you REALLY believe this hype?? Where are the intelligent investors?
WHERE IS THE GROWTH?? Are you relying upon China and Africa for growth?? How many licenses for Adobe products are sold in China? How can a person even buy software there off-line?? It is extremly difficult to even buy a TEXT BOOK in these countries, much less software. Ridiculous!
Well at least ygunstah tried to explain how the expansion of the internet is guaranteed growth for Adobe, some just choose not to listen.
Another example can be found in the Acrobat product. Anyone who wants to make a secure pdf uses Acrobat and you'd have to be blind to not see the growth potential in the gov't markets alone. Go on most gov't sites in the US and Canada and guess what, you'll find the document in an Acrobat PDF. Hmmm, no growth potential? Sure I can see that eventually this market will reach a head, but the potential has yet to be realised.
Anyway I'm out for the long weekend and off to the cottage, I'll check back in for a laugh next week. After 4 years of being on this forum, you bashers never cease deliver.
Um, if you are "short", you already SOLD ADBE on the basis it is going DOWN and will buy back at a MUCH LOWER price.
You need to read up on investing 101 basics.
