Kohl's Corp. Message Board

Why is this stock going down?

I have this stock. It has been a consistent performer, although stodgy. Hence, no messages on this board, after months of checking.
What is causing the selling here. Is it just one of the retailers being sold off because of media reports of slack holiday shopping?
    Comments, please

      Yes!

    • getting your numbers? Anyone can say the stock is
going to hit at a certain number...facts, I want facts
and not sales because WMT has just as good sales even
beating out KSS. Sounds to me like you own it & want this
to happen. It's ok, but don't predict something
without something substantial to back it up.

    • wrenching...dont compare current price to fundamentals...kss is the hottest retailer in the USA right now...they are opening stores not closing them or consolidating...

DH has Target going for them...the dept store division is flat and Mervyn's was once a Kohls, but they lost their focus and are now struggling....

KSS will keep going up as long as they open those nice new stores and have the name brand merchandise at great prices...they are doing everything right and promote wherever they can...

    • I appreciate your taking the time to clear up some of that fog that seems to settle over a would-be investor. Does the relative size of the two companies add any weight to the argument? What about focus? Dayton-Hudson seems to have a bigger tent. Thanks.

    • Here's a great recent article about Kohl's from Fortune Magazine.
      Good luck to all.

    • I waited until today to offer my two cents on your questions about Kohl's vs. Dayton's. You are right they are both good stores. The reason Kohl's trades at 49 times earnings, while Dayton's trades at 26 times earnings is growth. I've read that Kohl's is the fastest growing major retailer in the nation.
While Dayton's announced today that its same store sales were up 3.5% in February, Kohl's announced that its same store sales were up 10.3. Total sales were up 7.1% at Dayton's, while Kohl's jumped 26.4%, according to their respective announcements.

      Kohl's announcement follows:
      Kohl's Corporation February Sales Report

      MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Kohl's Corporation (NYSE: KSS -
news) reported today that sales for the four week period ended February 28, 1998 increased
26.4% over the four week period ended March 1, 1997. On a comparable store basis, sales
      increased 10.3%.

William Kellogg, Chairman of Kohl's Corporation stated that, ``We are pleased with our results
in February and are particularly encouraged by the early selling of spring merchandise.''

same time last year. During March and April, Kohl's will open 15 stores: three stores in
Knoxville, Tenn.; three stores in Richmond, Va.; three stores in the Winston-Salem/Greensboro,

    • Maybe someone can help evaluate these two good companies. Why does Kohl's PE sit at almost twice that of DH's?(49 vs 26)? Is a PE of 49 realistic for a department store?

DH's book value is $18.85, Kohl's is $11.10, yet the stocks trade for almost the same price

DH paid $0.72 in dividends, but Kohl's doesn't pay any.

      What makes Kohl's so attractive?

    • I would like to see a 3 for 1 stock split. Lets get the price back down to where individuals can pick up a couple of hundered shares at a time. At the current price a 3 for 1 would put KSS at about $26.00 a share. A great price and a great benefit for current stock holders.

I worked for KSS back when they had 18 stores. I left when they had 48 stores. As soon as they went public I new that the excellent quality of management would take this company far. Way to go Bill Kellogg, John Herma and all the Kohl's associates !!!1

    • What this stock needs is more trading volume and a more attractive price. Can anyone encourage Kohl's to split?
