I'd suggest that every long on this board do something to try to influence public opinion: write a reporter and/or a congressman/Senator (or many).
Here's what I wrote to a reporter I know who is familiar with the Siga/Chimerix case.
Hello again Bennett --
There's an interesting new wrinkle in the long saga of SIGA and the smallpox antiviral contract. Please make sure to read to the bottom of this..... I have some VERY interesting information for you. Is Congressman Darrell Issa simply rewarding Chimerix for its campaign contributions to him?
As you know, Chimerix continues to protest the award of the Siga contract. By my count, they've protested 8 times now, delaying the contract nearly two years -- the initial RFP had a stated award date of September 2009.
Recently, they've added two new amendments to their protest to the GAO -- delaying the time when GAO must make a decision from Aug. 22nd to Sept. 14th. (Source: go to http://www.gao.gov/legal/bids/docket.html and type in "Chimerix" in the "Protestor" box.)
Their earlier protests boxed BARDA in so much that BARDA eventually put out a sole-source RFP for the contract -- to SIGA alone. But now Chimerix is trying to make this backfire against SIGA.
Yesterday night, news came out that two House subcommittees are staging an investigation into the contract, claiming that campaign contributions have played a part in the contract award. (Source: http://www.cnbc.com/id/43384743 ) One of the Committees is led by Rep. Darrell Issa.
But is Siga the one pulling the strings of influence, or is it Chimerix? And is Rep. Issa himself guilty of being influenced by campaign contributions? As you can see from the above, NO ONE in charge of giving out the contract has accepted contributions from Perelman or SIGA. BUT!
Chimerix's legal team is McKenna, Long, and Aldridge. They're the ones pursuing the string of protests against Siga, and they are Chimerix's lobbyists: In 2009, McKenna, Long, and Aldridge, spent $50,000 in lobbying contributions ON BEHALF OF CHIMERIX
(Source: http://soprweb.senate.gov/index.cfm?event=getFilingDetails&filingID=8C3FF98C-4B9A-4ED9-BA62-5DF41BA74372 )
Over the past 10 years, McKenna, Long, & Aldridge has spent $950,000 on campaign contributions on Chimerix's behalf.

Here's the kicker: Congressman Darrell Issa himself has accepted multiple campaign contributions from McKenna, Long, and Aldridge.
In 2008, McKenna, Long, and Aldridge gave Darrell Issa $3,500. (Source: http://www.opensecrets.org/politicians/contrib.php?cycle=2008&type=I&cid=N00007017&newMem=N&recs=100 ). In 2006, MLA gave him $2,500.
At this source, you can find that Congressman Darrell Issa of California has accepted at least 11 contributions from McKenna, Long and Aldridge, every year from 2005 to 2010. And I think this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Here's another indication that Issa is in MLA's pocket:
McKenna Long & Aldridge will host a meeting, "The Biodefense Roundtable," on November 11 at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, CA. This invitation only event discusses issues facing biotech companies, specifically capital formation, regulatory environment and BioShield II legislation. Congressman Darrell Issa from California is the invited luncheon speaker.
I'd be just delighted if you would bring some of Chimerix's dirty dealings to the light of print. You can use any of the language that you like.
Thanks Kage for the great info. Just sent a letter to my Representative Gallegly.
All SIGA Longs should do the same. Very simply, just follow the link below...
Gallelgly is another republican. They all march in lockstep to their ideological line. Gallelgly will do nothing to check Issa. It's not the company lione. And will be yet another example of how the GOP is for the GOP first and the economic and national security of the USA a very very distant second.
Excellent letter Kage. If you don't mind,I would like to pass your letter along. I know of 3 major publications that would love to take Issa apart. This may reach the level of inquiry.
Also calling my Senators and Reps. with this info.
