Medical-Device Maker Cordis to Lay Off Workers at Miami Lake, Fla., Center
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

South Florida Sun-Sentinel via NewsEdge Corporation : Nov. 1--Cordis Corp., which makes medical devices such as stents, announced Friday that it will lay off about 95 employees at its Miami Lakes headquarters.
The South Florida employees of Cordis, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, are among about 200 worldwide who will be laid off, according to a company official.

"The positions that have been eliminated are ones that are not considered necessary to the overall needs of the business going forward," Marty Schildhouse, the company's public relations director, said Friday. "It has nothing to do with the economy, it's the nature of the business," he added.

Schildhouse would not specify the types of jobs being eliminated in South Florida, but said that most would be in the professional, administrative and technical areas, not in manufacturing.

He said the employees were notified Friday, but the layoffs would not become effective until Jan. 5.

Schildhouse said the company is trying to help the workers find other jobs within Johnson & Johnson or at companies in the area.

"We are working very hard to provide appropriate support for our employees that will be affected," he said.

Schildhouse said Cordis employs about 2,500 people at its Miami Lakes location.

On Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory about Cordis' Cypher stent, a tiny metal scaffold used in patients with heart disease.

The FDA said it has counted more than 290 reports of blood clots in Cypher recipients and in more than 60 the device was associated with the patient's death.

Schildhouse said the layoffs have nothing to do with the FDA's advisory and that the product is safe.
