The Journal News Story - Westchester
Meanwhile, the CWA vowed to fight the firing of a woman the company alleges was involved in a scuffle at a rally Saturday in Peekskill.

The incident took place when a Verizon manager from Manhattan tried to enter a building on Brown Street where the company was training managers and other replacements to perform union work in case there is a strike. She was greeted by dozens of union members wearing red shirts and shouting derisive comments about those who replace union workers during a strike.

The manager ended up on the ground with a sprained ankle and a dislocated shoulder.

On Sunday, the company fired Kathy Blair, a field technician from Verplank. Barca said a company manager taped a note on the door of Blair's home telling her she was fired.

He said the union has a sequence of photos that will show Blair did not assault the woman. He said he also has statements from about 10 witnesses.

"We have a member who has been wrongfully accused," Barca said. "She's absolutely not guilty, and we have the proof to vindicate her. This person is a mother, a wife, a grandmother. She's the nicest person in the world."

Police Lt. Gary Dasecke said a videotape Verizon made of the rally shows that someone kicked the manager in the lower leg. She fell when she tried to step back off the curb, he said. The case has been referred to prosecutors to decide if anyone will be arrested, he said.

John Bonomo, a company spokesman, confirmed the manager's injuries, but would not say whether she was at work yesterday. He said a worker was suspended for 10 days and her firing would become effective after that for her role in Saturday's incident, but would not confirm the worker was Blair.
