I bought 1,000 shares @ 42.7 today as a hold. I know, not a lot to most but a lot to me. Was I too early?

It depends. For the longer term, you'll be fine. If you are trying to time the market, VZ can be rather volatile. There are better stocks to buy for a short term gain.
