Why would Charles Schwab want acquire ETrade's toxic debt obligations ? That would be a huge mistake. Schwab is doing the right thing by running its business well and collecting dissatisfied ETrade customers. I expect Schwab is also getting disgruntled customers from Ameritrade , Scott, and other lower tier brokerages. In the future I expect Schwab will be getting significant customers from Merrill Lynch, since Bank of America should not be in the brokerage business. All things considered, Schwab is in a good position to attract new accoumts from several different sources. There is no reason to buy accounts from ETrade. Sooner or later ETrade's customers will end up at Schwab when they're ready to go with a first rate company.
