Intel, not AMD, first entered this space with the Infiniband asset purchase.
AMD then copied Intel, playing catch-up as usual, and latched on to Seamicro who Intel had looked at, but rejected.
Intel then made a "build-or-buy" determination and picked up Cray's interconnect assets to supplement Intel's Infiniband assets.
It's only incidental that this leave Cray dead in the water, and effectively ends AMD's channel into the HPC market. It's also only incidental that Cray actively pursued Intel as "revenge" for AMD leaving them high and dry by failing to provide promised Opteron 6200s and then dissed Cray, who needs buying out, in favor of Seamicro.
With Samsung's entry into this segment, between Intel and Samsung, AMD's Seamicro investment is headed for a dead end anyway. I see AMD trying to sell off Seamciro assets this year.
AMD is in panic mode. It has no strategy. It is flailing and watching the big guys for direction as to which way it should go. In classic AMD "me too" fashion, it is about to get crushed to dust. Again.
Intel is filled with pathological liars. They just happen to be lucky to have tons of monopoly money and a handful of geniuses like Dadi Perlmutter working for them.
It will only get them so far, though. Contrary to what the trolls here think, some people will take less money if they think that they can build something greater than the entrenched monopolies. That's what makes for real progress.
Charlie nailed this one dead center! He goes on to talk about Diane Bryant being "rather comical" in Intel's denials, wow-something new here!
Charlie explains Intel's ranting the best ever.."Six year olds on the playground utter more mature idioms when you take their toys away" regarding Intel's FUD campaign bashing AMD for buying Seamic.
And the bashers here followed that one to a tee, acting like six year olds each and everyday. Boy, intel sounds like a great place, teaching their bible of denials, denials and more denials. They sure have done an amazing job!!!
