Is this only possible ? Think about it.
Microsoft and Sony are vendor lock-in for the next 7 years. This is 100 million consoles sold. What will be the cost of APU chip ? $100 ? $10B assured for AMD.
Baloney. Mobile gaming is growing like crazy. Of course, AMD doesn't participate in that market. Similarly, PC gaming is more than capable of filling the niche consoles try and compete it, and in that segment AMD is getting killed by Intel and nVidia.
The PC angle is getting more interesting. PC's aren't 10X as expensive as consoles any more. And they're a lot more versatile, and still have a certain gravitas, whereas consoles are toys and only that, even if they have some PC functionality these days.
Anyone who discovers that not only can they have a PC, but can play all of the console games, and they can do it hooked up to their expensive and flashy big-screen digital TV, is going to seriously think about paying 1.5-2X what they'd budgeted for a console to get the PC system.
The vulnerabilities of the console segment just seem to grow like mushrooms in a fog.
Sony and Microsoft both have NOT spent billions on PS4 and XBox720 consoles, they not even out yet, and Sony never did show its PS4.
Given AMD's performance per watt and TPD envelop, it would take next to nothing to replace AMD's watt sucking POS with a All Haswell solution or Haswell/Kepler combo, now it would cost more than AMD's cheap chips, but perform much much better.
Sentiment: Strong Sell
Microsoft and Sony are the reason AMD will fall. PS4 and Xbox 720 will sell so poorly that they will be cutting production and looking for discounts to justify keeping producting going. In less than a year they will see the new reality of closed-source consoles, and will be deciding to shut them down in favor of adopting the open-source model. Which Sony is already way ahead on, having ported its games to be playable on Android mobiles. nVidia will have its A57 core integrated with one of its superior graphics chips by then. Sony could lead in the super-Ouya upgrade market. But more likely, since Sony is heavy with administrative costs for any project, they'll just walk away from consoles entirely. Sell the whole gaming division to whoever will have it. It'll be funny to see Rory carrying his kneepads into the offices of the Namco president to beg them to allow him to provide chips at cost.
WOW, that's the biggest FUD statement of the year!!!!!!
Did you forget about Apple Joy Pad, Razor Edge, Ouya, Valve Steam Box, Nvidia Shield, Indie Game Stick, or did you just want to spew FUD?
now read this and shut the F-UP!!!!!!
However, they note, each could eat away at the declining market share of traditional consoles
"All these other systems coming out create a lot of noise and confusion, but I don't think it impacts things much," said Billy Pidgeon, an analyst for Inside Network
"High end hardware? To me, that's not going to have a disruptive effect. ... [However,] there's going to be impact on [traditional] consoles. Expectations for penetration and sales velocity [of those systems] are going to be overly high. They're not going to sell like they have in the past," Pidgeon said. "People are buying fewer packaged goods, and you're dealing with smaller user bases today."
