    TARGET gives SALVATION ARMY the BOOT

    Here is a good reason to BOYCOTT TARGET from OneMillionDads:

    Sad to say, if Target stores refuse to reverse their policy, thousands poor and needy will not have a very happy Christmas. Why? Because Target stores nationwide have banned the Salvation Army's red kettle campaign. They have told The Salvation Army's bell ringers, "You're no longer welcome here."

    Target spokesperson Jennifer Hanson said that allowing the Salvation Army to collect funds as a mission of hope for the hungry, the homebound, and the helpless would violate their 'no solicitation' policy.

    Target's new policy is opposite of that with community-minded giants like Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney's, and Big Lots. They believe the Salvation Army serves a critical need by offering kindness to a family in need.

    "Last year, bell ringers raised about $8.8 million nationally outside Target stores," Major George Hood, Community Relations Secretary for the Salvation Army U.S.A.

    Target's change adds pressure on the charity as it faces budget cuts from other sources and an increasing demand for services.

    "We're going to lose 112 days of food service for the hungry because of [Target's] decision," Russ Russell, Salvation Army executive director for development told The Detroit News.

    Because of Target's decision 6,000 people, including children, will be forced to go elsewhere to find help.

    Please take this action:

    Tell Target that you will be doing your Christmas shopping this year at Wal-Mart, J.C. Penny's, Big Lots or another store which cares about the poor and homeless. We know Target will block emails through the OneMillionDads email system, so your individual action is critical.

    1. Call Target customer service toll-free at 1-800-440-0680, option 2, then option 2 at the next prompt.

    2. Call your local Target store and speak with the manager. You can find the number in your local phone book, or through their Online Store Locator.

      I'm Appaulled, shame on you Target, thanks for the numbers, they will be hearing from me, I will be shopping at sears and Wal-mart.

    • Did you really check all the facts? Given the reasoning below, would you fault Target for refusing to give Hare Krishna's a place to solicit as well? Can you name another corporation that gives 5% of pre-tax income to charity, including the Salvation Army?

      As for me, I contribute in Salvation Army charitable programs - do you?

      "Target Corporation�s Position on Solicitation at Stores

      Target Corporation has a long-standing �no solicitation� policy at all of our stores. Like many nationwide retailers, Target Corporation implemented this policy in order to be consistent with all the groups that request access to our stores and to provide our guests with a comfortable, distraction-free shopping environment.

      Therefore, Target Corporation restricts the use of its parking lots and facilities to only business use. Target does not permit individuals (including political candidates and/or their campaign organizations) or nonprofit organizations to solicit donations, distribute literature, sell merchandise or hold events on our premises.

      Target has received attention for applying this policy to all groups, including the Salvation Army. We receive an increasing number of solicitation inquiries from nonprofit organizations and groups each year and determined that if we continue to allow the Salvation Army to solicit, then it opens the door to any other groups that wish to solicit our guests. While some of our guests may welcome the opportunity to support their favorite charity or cause, allowing these organizations to solicit means that Target would also have to permit solicitation by organizations whose causes or behavior may be unacceptable to our guests. Target notified the Salvation Army of this decision in January 2004, well in advance of the holiday season, so that the organization would have time to find alternative fundraising sources. Target also asked the Salvation Army to look for other ways we could support their organization under our corporate giving guidelines. At this date, they have not provided a proposal that fits those guidelines.

      Our company has many other means by which it supports organizations whose charitable programs fall within our corporate giving guidelines. Nonprofit organizations, including local Salvation Army chapters, can apply for grants through their local Target stores. For decades, nonprofit organizations across the country have successfully worked with Target in this manner. We are asking the Salvation Army to work with us in the same manner as every other organization and group who asks to solicit our guests.     • Cash is rapaidly becoming a thing of the past. The Savation Army would do well to replace those annoying bells with card swiping machines. Charity is a wonderful thing, but those damn bells are about the second most irritating thins during the holidays. The first, of course, is the constant bombarment of crappy holiday music each and every store must play to "get us in the holiday mood"
