Stock performance lately reminds me of the escalator I saw in the last Sears store I went in. The store is an ancient relic of the 50’s that has not been renovated in any form, perhaps as a monument to those better days. The down escalator was grinding loudly and lurching in fits and starts, and pitched several of the occupants on their aged posteriors as they neared to bottom. As I watched, a department manager came over, worker pulled the panel and began beating on the insides with a Maglite flashlight. He broke the Maglite, which is nearly impossible to do. Muttering in frustration, he finally killed the circuit, stopping the carnival ride, and peacefully went back to reading his newspaper.
