Zarman - If they buy you in

Can you turn around and re-short?

    • I can reshort if there are shares available, but obviously if there is a buy-in it will be difficult.
Herringto, thanks for the tip on Scottrade, but I am in Canada so have to stick with Canadian brokerages.

arent there american brokerages with canadian affiliates
you have to check out which shares are shortable and which are not, interactivebrokers does not allow you to short nasdaq 11830 stocks, you could not short vaso for example, I guess switching brokers is a pain in the ..
anyway lets keep in touch and find some more short candidates, bill alpert of barrons is an excellent source for shortable stocks,
good luck with your buy in

    • i'll answer for him...

yes you can reshort, as long as the broker has shares available.

what Zman didn't mention was the sometimes worst part about being bought in....which is that when your broker buys you in, he usually just goes out into the mkt and buys x number of shares at the mkt price. many time this will drive the price up anywhere from 1 to 5%, depending on liquidity, # of shares etc.

worst case example. i was short air canada at about 1.70. i got bought in at around 1.85, and the following morning it went down to 1.50 or so...not only did i lose out on a potential gain, but i actually lost money due to higher buyin price.

buyins = one of the main pitfalls of shorting...
