HARMAN - intergrates Apple's Siri in automobile - in car speech control

    GENEVA, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The International Motor Show 2013 – HARMAN, the premium global audio and infotainment group, is providing Ferrari in-car speech control. At the Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari showcased the integration of Apple’s Siri in the latest Ferrari FF model. This marks the first such system integration by HARMAN.

Due to the seamless combination of Apple’s technology with the existing head unit, operation is just as simple as it is with any Siri enabled iPhone. A long press of the infotainment system’s menu button on the steering wheel activates Siri, while commands and audio feedback are picked up clearly and played through built-in microphones and the car’s audio system. Additionally, the volume is adjusted for better comprehensibility – just like the mobile phone, where Siri stops any music being played once it is activated.

Michael Mauser, HARMAN’s Executive Vice President and Co-President of Infotainment & Lifestyle Divisions, commented: “This Siri integration is an important milestone in the cooperation between HARMAN and Ferrari. By transferring the known modus operandi to the car, Ferrari offers its customers the ease of use of their mobile devices with an embedded premium HARMAN infotainment system.”

      • It can evolve into more active audio info feedback to the driver - hints on driving to fast , etc - how to improve gas milage, more details vs a simple idiot light , etc --- allow 3rd party apps to interact with the cars onboard computer system for maint and diag-- along with hand free interface to navigation system, select radio station, etc, etc
either with an existing smartphone or a built in unit supplied by the automobile company

Cirrus supplies both Aple as well as Harman

    • Automatic — a start-up company based out of San Francisco — is looking to change all of that. The company is launching an iPhone app and small hardware device, which plugs into your vehicle’s existing OBD port (the one they use at the air quality testing facilities).
Once plugged in, the device and app communicate via Bluetooth and grind out various vehicle metrics and safety functions.
There is also a trip timeline that displays fuel efficiency. With each trip taken, the app will display how much fuel it took to get you from point A to point B, as well as your mileage per gallon. This seems especially helpful to drivers in older vehicles, which don’t provide fuel economy figures.
Automatic can show you what those pesky “check engine” codes mean and for simple problems, allows you to clear the light yourself — saving you a trip to a mechanic in the process.
Rounding out the Automatic’s features list is a built-in parking reminder app and automated crash alert system that notifies emergency services in the event of an accident.

During the setup process, drivers can select three emergency contacts with mobile numbers who are then notified via a text message when an accident has occurred and when help is on the way.

“Smartphones and the internet have transformed our day-to-day lives, but our cars and how we drive them have been left behind, said Thejo Kote, chief executive office and co-founder of Automatic. “We believe that the smartphone can, in effect, upgrade millions of cars on the road today, and offers drivers features only available in high-end cars with expensive service plans.”
