        Netease Inc.'s (NTES, K3MD.SG) second-quarter earnings rose 25% as the company continued to thrive on its Chinese Internet-gaming base, even while its operating costs increased again.
        American depositary shares of the company were up 5.8% at $65 after hours as results beat analysts' expectations.
        NetEase, which earns most of its revenue from Internet gaming, has posted mostly steady profit growth. Games such as Tianxia and Heroes of Tang Dynasty are driving revenue growth thanks to a strong fan base in China. The company also operates the popular World of Warcraft game in China under a license with Activision Blizzard Inc. (ATVI).
        For the latest period, NetEase posted a profit of 1.1 billion Chinese yuan ($176.9 million), or CNY8.41 ($1.37) an ADS, up from CNY875.3 million, or CNY6.65 an ADS a year ago.
        Pretax revenue increased 20% to CNY2.41 billion ($393.3 million).
        Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting a profit of $1.24 an ADS on revenue of $363 million.
        Revenue from online games, the biggest contributor to the top line, increased 18%, while advertising revenue, a much smaller contributor, grew 33%.
        Operating costs rose 43% to CNY626 million ($102 million).
        Dollar conversions were based on the noon buying rates specified by the Federal Reserve on June 28.
        Through the close, the stock was up 44% this year.
