Youtube Leanback is in public beta

Kittens are just a click away

ONLINE VIDEO LIBRARY Youtube has pretty much nailed instant-on TV in its Leanback service.
Other have tried and failed before by using too much jiggery-pokery that took at least three clicks and links to access. But Youtube has created the first online TV service that gives users moving wallpaper with just a single mouse-click.
That's millions of pounds of investment so that you can access kittens on TV ten seconds faster than standard Youtube delivery.
"Just as its name implies, YouTube Leanback is all about letting you sit back, relax and be entertained. Videos tailored to your interests play as soon as you visit the site and they play in full screen and high definition, continuously," blogged Kuan Yong, senior product manager at Youtube.
"There's no need to click, search, or browse, unless you want to, of course. Watching YouTube becomes as easy as watching TV."
Still in public beta, Leanback is annoyingly slick. You don't get access to any content that's not already available on Youtube, but it's all about the delivering the simplest interface. The interface automatically starts playing content feeds based on your preferences, and it even accesses social notworking for users plugged in via Facebook.
If you want to watch something else, you can navigate the entire interface using four arrow keys and the enter key with context sensitive commands. It doesn't even need mouse inputs.
Leanback will be part of Google TV, which is due to launch this autumn. µ
