I had been saddled with a house from a divorce in 2006. I couldn't sell the house b/c the ex- kept fighting me on every issue, and it was in both of our names. Every time there was a disagreement, I had to summon attorneys, get her served [which she dodged], and that took 6 months.
I lost a great girlfriend [who I met a year after the divorce] due to that.
Finally, in 2011, I found someone else, and I worked the hardest ever to sell the house. Both knees got serious problems so I couldn't maintain it. I ended up selling the house to my ex- for almost nothing -- an offer she had never considered prior to my knee problems.
So great, right, I sell the house and have the great girlfriend and great.
Except I'm a computer programmer, and I start to get tendon issues in both arms and wrists which are aggravated by typing. I don't have other training for other vocations. Meanwhile my knees get worse despite physical therapy. Surgery is not recommended.
Add to that tinnitus and toot issues from bruxism and then a foot injury [tore a major muscle from wearing the wrong footwear], and I go from a guy with a promising computer programming future who goes on long hikes and works out 9 hours a week to someone who can't go a single day on little activity without bad pain and a feeling things are going to get much worse for me [some of these conditions never go away].
I sold the house.
I still have the girlfriend barely -- can you imagine you start dating a guy who is physically fit and his body collapses in one year while you date him, and he's trying to adjust to that and fears he can't keep his occupation because of what it is doing to his body?
I still have the job -- barely -- all the medical absences add up.
One thing I've realized is that no amount of stock brokerage money will ever make up for those losses.
Finguflin: I can understand and relate. I have very bad tinnitus, (like a fire alarm 24/7). I also have tendon issues and traveling blood clots/fluids and on and on.
I am also into computer programs. I was involved in outward bound programs.
Some friendly advice: Good honest caring people (such as yourself) tend to think that a message board is family. I would add views to that in voice - not on online. Bashers who want to feel important will find fault with you.
If you want to talk off line, let me know here.
Maybe those of us who made killings on the short side could kick in to some kind of relief fund for those who got reamed playing it long. We could disgorge say, I don't know, 50% of our profits into a pool to reimburse Cramer victims. Or maybe......
Naaaaaaah!! I'm buying a beach house!
I've been there my friend, I know how you feel. Remember AMZN back in 08, I lost 80K on top of 100 plus K in other trades, my house was mortgaged to the MAX, but I'm still here and you will be to. JESUS SAVES, just put your faith in Him and try to ignore the money which is truly passing away over time.
