Hemlock Grove going to Cannes for MIP TV

"Executive producer Roth and the stars of the new Netflix/Gamount International Television mystery series will present the show at the international TV industry event."

"Roth, Janssen and Skarsgard will stroll the red carpet for MIP TV's opening night Monday, April 8 and will take part in a co-production case study panel April 9, where they will discuss the creation of Hemlock Grove and the Netflix on-demand distribution model. Hemlock Grove is the latest of Netflix's original drama series, following the critically-acclaimed political drama House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, which premiered on the online service earlier this year."

Last year's rally started when "House of Cards" went to Cannes. It's a proven formula for Netflix.

"Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013, MIPTV is the place where the entire ecosystem of TV & online content comes together in Cannes to make deals, to be inspired and to forge new partnerships. Not only is the place to source and sell the freshest content globally, it is teeming with opportunities to help you create new business, green-light partnerships and lift-off to co-production projects at the earliest stages of development."

I get a laugh when some Motley Fool contributor warns Netflix shareholders that Hulu and Amazon are also producing original content. Well, if my neighbor films his kid skateboarding and posts it to Youtube, he is producing original content. The phrase "original content" is entirely meaningless. Netflix is putting big bucks behind major Hollywood quality productions and then they are shown at premiere venues where TV/Hollywood insiders see that Netflix is aiming to create buzzworthy events that can attract several million viewers and create controversy in the industry.

    • Okay, we're are seeing the evolution and standardization of the Netflix formula for creating an event. Like "House of Cards", "Hemlock Grove" is now flooding horror and movie fan sites with MULTIPLE trailers. When I say flooding, I mean Netflix makes the trailers available and the sites scoop them up because they are always hungry for news about major upcoming films and a 13 hour horror movie from Eli Roth is very newsworthy.

HG now has about six different trailers, four of them released in the past day with titles "Gypsy" "Blood Angel" "Suspects" and "Grisly". This is what they did with "House of Cards", multiple spots which target different segments of the movieTV-viewing audience. Reed and Ted are redefining the rules of movie/tv promotion so that it is tailored to the strengths of the internet.

The next step will be multiple promotional posters each highlighting a different character from the show.

It looks like Netflix has chosen Fridays to be the day of a shows premiere just as if it were a theatre release. Can you remember the two major theatre releases of February 1st, the premiere of HoC? "Warm Bodies" (a zombie movie) and "Bullet to the Head" (a stallone actioner), both of them forgotten while HoC is still talked about.

    • And BOY it's expensive to make!!! Will $8 / month hold? I bet not.
