    Not irrational

Nothing unusual or irrational here with the rising stock price. What is unusual is why the stock price has languished for so long as this stock has been way undervalued. At $5/share, this stock was selling at more than 50% below book value, had $3.50/share of cash, was profitable, and had less than $100 million in debt. Conservative true value is probably about the book price. During normal times, some other company or hedge fund would have bought the company. We are not in normal times. The Obama era will go down in history as one of the most anti-business periods in US history. Sadly, there are many other stocks with the same story that do not reflect their true value because of the environment we are in. For true value in many companies to be recognized will take the US getting back to more favorable business conditions. When and if this will happen is the age of uncertainty that we find ourselves in.

    Sentiment: Buy

    • TA is a great franchise. They are in the majority of the states and Canada. Here in CT there is one near us. The attraction is that they sell gas within a cent or two of both Costco and BJ's. And no membership cost. Add to that that they also sell deisel at a good price. The over-the-road trucks are constantly stopping there. The stores also carry fast food and sundries. It is a winning combo and they will do very well. I am up a bunch from a buy a couple of weeks ago. I am sorry I did not buy more and I will on any drop to the stock price. Go TA!

    • It is price vs value. Price is what it sells for and value is what it should sell for. And uncertainty is your friend........ uncertainty makes for marked dislocations and allow you to make money. If there is no uncertainty then good luck on getting a return on your investment! I am all for uncertainty.. more is better!!

      Sentiment: Strong Buy

      • Mike ... I completely agree with your Price versus Value argument ... and, I am very happy for your gains ... I've made plenty myself, trust me ... the only reason that I've changed my sentiment to Sell is due to the completely irrational market action ... it may go another 10-20% higher and I hope that it does for you and any others here ... especially any that have been hanging on from the darker days ... celebrate Spartan, you deserve it! Just be balanced and reasonable ... I've seen some people really hurt over the years ... most likely why I often sell too early ... oh well, it's just one of my many faults ... have a great weekend!!

        Sentiment: Sell

    • I'd be interested in hearing the tickers of some "other stocks with the same story that do not reflect their true value." Thanks much fixedincomeman.

      • Great idea. I bought several stocks in late Dec. 2012 based on the following: highest peercentage under book value with an average to good balance sheet, a long sell off base of a least 2-5 years, stock that will perform well in an improving PE environment that are under a 7 multiple, stocks in industries that have been out of favor since 2008, etc. TA was one of those stocks that meant the profile. It has performed the best moving from $4.50 to $7.60. I was also lucky enought to buy some Suntech Power (SWPR) at the same time before Buffet's purchase moved it from $5.80 to $9.50. It sits at $8.10. Some of the other winners are GCI and WFR. I took positions BIG in solars buying FSLR, LDK, YGE, and STP.calls. Also some RIMM 15 calls when the stock was $11.45 iI have losses in some of these positions but purchaed long term calls so we will see what unfolds from June to next Jan. on those. Another winner was GGC which I bought at $40. It's now $50. I have followed that company for the past 20 years and know it well. It had a reverse stock split several years ago. Good play for a turn around in the economy. Some of the ones I an looking at to add are FVE (very low PE), Seagate (STX) and more BAC calls. I have been buying BAC calls since that stock was at 6 and have had good luck with it so far. So....just some of my thoughts. No recommendations to anyone for any of this. Just my thoughts.
