ND moving inmates to private MN prison

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A private prison in Minnesota has begun taking inmates from North Dakota's crowded prison system, corrections officials say.

State prison warden Tim Schuetzle said 16 inmates were sent to the Prairie Correctional Center in Appleton, Minn. last week. Ten more inmates are slated to be transferred to the private prison this week.

The state has a contract with Corrections Corporation of America, which owns the prison.

Schuetzle said North Dakota has used the facility in the past when it ran out of space in state prisons and county jails.

He said North Dakota's prison system topped 1,300 inmates last week, breaking a record for inmate numbers.

"We've been overcrowded now for the past eight years, be we have hit al all-time record," Schuetzle said.
