Correctional Facility May Close Its Doors
    May 19, 2005, 7:50 AM

More than 100 jobs may be in jeopardy at one correctional facility in our region.

Otter Creek in Floyd County employs around 175 people.

The facility lost nearly 600 of their inmates after they were transferred back to Indiana.

Some employees are worried about their futures if the center can't fill vacant space.

For the last five years inmates from Indiana have occupied the Otter Creek Correctional Facility in Floyd County, but on Friday the remaining 24 will be moving back to Indiana.

When officials at Otter Creek found out Indiana had room for the inmates that had been housed in their facility, they started notifying employees about what could happen.

The warden says CCA, the owner of the prison, is working to make sure all the employees are taken care of if the facility closes.

"We don't want you to be caught at the last minute if we wind up closing the place down whether it be temporary or permanent and you wonder what the heck do I do now. We wanted to get the information out to people," Michael
    Samberg said.

CCA offered to move those who are willing to another of their facilities. The closest is in Beattyville. Those who have lived and worked in the area for many years hopes no one will have to move.

"This is a place where people can get a job and also make a career. I started here twelve years ago as a corrections officer so it's just a good example of what you can achieve," Jeff Little said.

A contract which would bring new inmates to the facility could possibly be
    awarded by June 29.

There are 656 beds here at this facility and the employees hope all those are filled by the first of September.

The warden says if a contract is not awarded in June, he hopes the company will continue to look for other contracts so the facility will remain open.
