"Three treated at hospital after jailhouse brawl"
    San Diego Union-Tribune January 30, 1999
    Otay Mesa
    - Two detainees and a corrections officer at the
privately-run San Diego Detention Center here were treated at a
hospital for cuts yesterday after a brawl among suspected
illegal immigrants awaiting deportation hearings. About
40 inmates exchanged blows in the recreation area,
drawing about 20 corrections officers. Officials are not
sure what triggered the fight at the 200-bed facility,
which is run by Corrections Corporation of America.
Corrections Corporation of America secured the contract to
operate the former city jail early last year. It had been
    run by Florida-based Wackenhut Corrections
Corporation since 1992. Corrections Corporation of America,
the world's largest private prison operator, also won
the bid to build a 1,000-bed medium-security jail for
federal prisoners on county land next to the Otay Mesa
