IVR undervalued based on forward earnings yield

SHARES OF NORTHSTAR REALTY FINANCE POTENTIALLY UNDERVALUED IN TERMS OF FORWARD EARNINGS YIELD (NRF, IVR, AGNC, CIM, CYS)Print Share Sep 09, 2011 (SmarTrend(R) News Watch via COMTEX) --

Below are the highest five companies in the Mortgage REITs industry based on estimated Forward Earnings Yields. Using projected earnings for the current fiscal year, the forward earnings yield is useful to compare a stock's return vs. owning a similar stock or other yield assets (e.g. bonds). Generally, the higher the earnings yield, the more undervalued the stock.

NorthStar Realty Finance (NYSE:NRF - Snapshot Report) has the highest Forward Earnings Yield of 37.3%; Invesco Mortgage Capital (NYSE:IVR - Snapshot Report) is next with a Forward Earnings Yield of 23.6%; and American Capital Agency (NASDAQ:AGNC - Analyst Report) has the next highest with a Forward Earnings Yield of 19.7%.

Chimera Investment (AMEX:CIM - Snapshot Report) follows with a Forward Earnings Yield of 19.5% and Cypress Sharpridge Investments (NYSE:CYS - Snapshot Report) rounds out the group with a Forward Earnings Yield of 17.3%.

SmarTrend currently has shares of NorthStar Realty Finance in an Downtrend and issued the Downtrend alert on March 23, 2011 at $5.12. The stock has fallen 32.6% since the Downtrend alert was issued.

    • You wonder why I made an assertion to the effect that I was able to assist in the support of IVR, well here's one example of many that I posted.

When people were knocking the hell out of IVR I was posting information such as the following:

    • Totally undervalued!!! Why tell everyone though?

    • I've never seen p/e ratios (which are numbers from past earnings, not future p/e ratios based on expectations of future earnings) used to measure oversold conditions. Technical readings, like oversold conditions, are usually based on RSI readings.

Another way of looking at this is that the S&P 500 has rallied some 110 points from its recent low around 1098, or about 10%, while IVR has rallied $1.83 from its $12.55 low or about 15%. By that measure, IVR has not been underperforming during this latest bounce, so maybe it is not as oversold as you may think versus the averages.

A beter perspective on how oversold IVR is its P/E ratio versus its competitors as follows:

      AGNC...4.13
      ANH....7.30
      ARR....20.15
      CIM....4.89
      CMO....7.29
      HTS....5.97
      NLY....5.87

      IVR....3.61

    • If you look carefully at the other three above IVR on the list, IVR looks to me like the only one of those four that I would buy.

Look at the payout ratios for some detail.
      IVR's looks fine.

      Thanks Chip

    • When you post any stock is undervalued, what you are really saying is;

help, help, please buy, i am losing alot of money.

misery likes company. you are a miserable person.

    • Expiration, clear and buy. Sitting on "safe".
Op. Twist...??? What has the government instituted that hasn't taken months...or years and actually did anything?
If the action is not taken by the PRIVATE INDUSTRY and Markets...it's a flop. Tell the DC Clowns to back off and let the guys who make money...make money! Damn Politics and politicians. Just my opinion.
