I get my stock recommendations from vestorsage.com. That's where I learned about ETP. I like the strategy that vestorsage uses, namely using dividends to feed the other part of your portfolio (some of the picks are SYY, PM, ESRX, etc). The picks have done well for me, and there's not 50 different stock selections to buy...more typical is about 20, which is manageable for me. It requires a subscription ($150/year), but the first 2-months are free, you can cancle at anytime, and that is really quite cheap if you do the trades in a discount brokerage, like Scottrade.
I'm not quite to retirement, but the investment guide also has some good, stable income producing funds (Vanguard, with low expenses), and you can change the allocations in the guide to fit your risk tolerance. My father-in-law uses the income portfolio for his retirement portfolio and is quite happy with it.
