    ETP vs KMP total return

On Jan 7 this year I invested an equal amount of cash in ETP and KMP within 3 minutes. I set both at Fidelity to drip distributions. Fidelity does participate in the discount drip plan for ETP and KMP does not have a drip so Fidelity buys the drip shares in the open market 3 business days before the pay date.

So, the following total return is theoretically perfect because it takes into account unit price change, different distribution yields and the effect of ETP's discount drip with distributions reinvested.

As of a few minutes ago, ETP is up 5.725% from Jan 7 with one distribution reinvested. At the same time with one distribution drip, KMP is up 3.957%.

      • Fdelity has no drip fee or commission on a market drip. Their stock trade commission is 7.95 and my negotiated margin rate is 1.75%. I'm very happy with Fidelity's overall service vs their cost.

Ordinarily I don't drip in the taxable account because I like round lots and choice of time to buy. However, ETP's discount is about 1,000 per year for me so I drip to get the discount. My curiosity on total return on ETP vs KMP caused me to drip KMP also.,

I drip all in the retirement accounts (for no fee or commission) because I can't be bothered trying to time the reinvestment of a few thousand multiple times per quarter.
