Monday March 14, 9:19 am ET
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., March 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BB&T Corporation (NYSE: BBT - News) today said it has been named to the elite 2005 Dividend Achievers Index by Mergent Inc., a New York City-based provider of global financial information.
The annual list of Dividend Achievers is made up of publicly traded companies that have increased their cash dividends every year for at least the past 10 years. They typically have "strong cash reserves, solid balance sheets and a proven record of consistent earnings growth," according to Mergent.
The 2005 Dividend Achievers Index consists of only 314 firms out of the 15,000 Mergent tracks.
"We're certainly pleased to be recognized by Mergent for our excellent record of annually raising cash dividends," said BB&T Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Allison. "BB&T is primarily owned by individual retail shareholders who value a consistent and healthy growth rate in dividends."
BB&T has increased its quarterly cash dividend payments for 33 consecutive years, which puts it in the top 15 percent on the Dividend Achievers list for consecutive yearly increases.
BB&T also has one of the nation's longest records of continuous dividend payments - and the longest among banks. It has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1903.
The five-year compound growth rate for BB&T's quarterly dividend payment is 11.8 percent, compared to 3.02 percent for the S&P 500. The 10-year compound growth for BB&T's dividend payments is 13.9 percent, compared to 3.9 percent for the S&P 500.
Hundley was a great pool player, used to play at a bar on Hale St in Charleston called the Strand. Hundley grew up there and West only about 15 miles away in Cabin Creek. They called him Zeke from Cabin Creek. He called them, watch my dust boys.
Things at BBT must be getting bad. My observations of messages that are posted, it seems like when all the messages posted pertain to everything but news/complaints of the company, the company is in trouble. Is BBT in trouble?
Never met Hundley but saw him play. It was fun just to watch the warmups. I met Thorne when he was being recruited by Duke. I always wondered if the rumor of the promise to build a dental school to keep him at Morgantown was true. I was unaware of the connection between the Retton's, interesting. I suppose she got her mother's height.
Well heck, I don't wanta make ya feel bad, but I met Hundley and Thorn. Remember when West was driving in for a layup and hit his head on the bottom of the bankboard, and the team with Lloyd Sharrar that played Calif for the national title. I'm sure you knew Ronnie Retton is Mary Jo's dad.
I went to the site you provided and did not realize that it was Canisus that eliminated the "neers in NYC. That was the same school that eliminated NC State in a memorable game at the "Garden" in '56. The Wolfpack was ranked 2 in the country behind San Francisco and Canisus beat State in a couple of overtimes. I think three or four of States starters fouled out and Everette Case had some things to say about the NYC provided refs. The center at State was Shavlik Randolph's (Duke) grand father (Ronnie Shavlik) and San Francisco had a guy named Bill Russel. I think the year was 56 but am relying on memory.
