2001 through 2nd week of October 2007 BBT traded in low $40s with rare exceptions.
The current trouble started mid October 2007 and affected BBT less than BAC, RF or STI. Look at the 5 year BBT chart with comparison BAC, RF and STI.
Before 2001 strong growth 1990-1999 with a bobble mid 1999 to end of 2000.
The fact is that BBT has built a strong enterprise during the current trouble. Colonial is one example. BB&T took the parts that fit the long term strategy and did not get suckered into growth for the sake of growth.
My visceral instinct is that we are more likely to see a repeat of 1990-1999.
The few months in the 20s were the result of the current problems, nothing to do with the long term performance of BBT before the current troubles.
