It's hard to figure why they expanded that business in 2000. But getting rid of it seems to be in line with their stated objectives... http://www.marketwatch.com/story/ibm-looking-to-sell-chip-manufacturing-operations-2014-02-06-224491314
Horse manure. They need to fill their fabs to be cost effective, doesn't matter too much what product. It's nice to have high yielding, high profit product but that is not the only consideration. Got to pay for that tooling.
I'm sure the loss of Apple hurt but has not "effectively destroyed IBM's business". What a foolish statement.
Its "The economy, stupid". If big business was going gangbusters and they were selling and leasing mainframes and services we would not be having this discussion.
it's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ .. remember when they had difficulty recruiting partners for the West Complex
at EF ?? then finally went ahead with what they had ?? That only lasted about 10 years . strictly R&D stuff ..
and few good things came out of it ... then 323 got mothballed before it actually started any real production ,
then reopened it and it prospered ... These are things that companies with more money than God can
do ............ more evidence of phenomenal strength ... don't bet against the winners ... garce
