    Chevron Discovery

Knowing how much emphasis EPD has put into the deep water trend over the last 3 years, I thought we would get a nice pop today. Oh well. Perhaps EPD is not represented in this part of the gulf.

Does anyone know if this discovery would/could tie back to one of EPD's pipelines?

    • This one will most likely go to the Williams pipeline system.

    • After seaching for current data on deepwater GOM pipelines, I found:

      http://www.gomr.mms.gov/homepg/whatsnew/techann/2006/2006-022.pdf
This report is titled "Deepwater Gulf of Mexico 2006: America's Expanding Frontier" and is by the Dept of Interior's Minerals Management Services. Look on page 70 - figure 50 - a map of the GOM's pipeline grid.

Also see page 5 figure 1 for a grid map of the gulf - with the large grids being identified by name - which helps one with navigation and location. EPD's Independence Hub is in the deep water - but it is still in the Mississippi Canyon - which is not that far off the Lou coast. And the Cameron Highway [EPD has a 50% interest, as does Valero] appears to go deep into Atwater Valley and through Green Canyon. Still, the Jack drilling was in Walker Ridge, which is the grid just south of Green Canyon.

How big is each 'grid'? Around 60 miles wide and 25 miles deep.

Most of the data is from 2004 - but I am not aware of any big changes since then. And even the 2004 data shows pipes under contruction or proposed at that time. And there appears to be no 20 inch or larger pipes that go as south as the Jack field.

At this point in time, it looks like Chevon may have its own pipeline system in the GOM. So do Kerr-McGee and Red Hawk [see page 69 of the report], which have pipes into the deepwater. So EPD does have competition.

As to today's price action - looks like someone with a lot of shares is making an exit. Volume is very high - and it is staying high. And there are days when these things happen.

It is my understanding that there are NO pipelines in that part of the Gulf. And the flow from that field is so large that it might require its own dedicated line. And if the map of the field's location [in the WSJ] is anywhere near accurate, the gulf coast home of the pipe could flow more towards Brownsville or Corpus Chisti than to the New Orelans/Houston area.

But I am no expert on the subject, and I am only guessing.

Note: I did not intend to make a seperate thread for this subject - it just took me 30 minutes to get the quotes from the EPD web site and the NY Times to do my seperate posting ["EPD & Deep Water"] - so mlpnewby's post was not visible on the site when I started my message.

I misread the map. It was the Great White, Silvertip, Trident, Tabago and Tiger fields or platforms that were closer to Brownsville.

I also wrote that "it is my understanding that there are NO pipelines in that [near Chevon's Jack platform] part of the Gulf." Given the lack of detail on the system maps from EPD, I could easily have been mistaken about how far south they extend. EPD may have existing pipes near the 'Jack' area.
