    • APPLE TV, NETFLIX, REDBOX, HULU ARE FUTURE.

Charter Communication, Blockbuster, Hollywood, Dish Network, DirectTV, and specifically TiVO are junkies and risky investment.

Apple announced a smaller, cheaper version of its Apple TV device for streaming movies and TV shows over the Internet and into the living room. It also unveiled a new line of iPods.

"Our users want Hollywood movies and TV shows, cheaper; they don't want amateur hour," Jobs said. "They don't want another computer. They don't want to manage storage. They want it to be silent, cool and small."

The new Apple TV announced Wednesday will only let people rent video content. For first-run HD movies the day they come out on DVD, people will have to pay $4.99. HD TV show rentals will be 99 cents and permanent download, which sell for $1.99 and $2.99.

The price of the box is also being cut to $99, from $229. Cheaper options for streaming video had been available, including Roku's set-top boxes that start at $60.

"We've sold a lot of them, but it's never been a huge hit," Jobs told hundreds of journalists, bloggers and analysts in San Francisco. He said the previous Apple TV setup is too complicated for average consumers.

The new Apple TV will give people access to the HD version of movies just released on DVD. Television episodes also be available, including such hits as "The Simpsons" and "Glee."

Happy customers watch content from Netflix streamed over the Internet can also access their "instant" queue through Apple TV. Jobs promised that the device would have the largest library of movies in the world available for rental on the first day of purchase.

Jobs said only News Corp.'s Fox and The Walt Disney Co.'s ABC have been willing to license their shows for streaming so far, but he said he hoped others would join once the service gains popularity.

Earlier, Jobs unveiled an iPod Nano that lacks buttons. Instead, controls for playing, pausing and selecting music are right on the screen. It will cost $149 for the 8 Gb version and $179 for 16 Gb. Like previous versions, the Nano has a built-in FM tuner and can display photos.

In a refresh to the iPod Touch, Apple is adding video-chat features similar to the newest iPhone. It has a front-facing camera for conducting video chats with other iPod Touch and iPhone users over Wi-Fi using Apple's FaceTime program. A camera on the back can be used for taking snapshots and recording video. Prices range from $229 to $399.

There, Jobs also introduced a new iPod Shuffle, the lowest-end music player in Apple's line. Like the past generation, it can speak the names of playlists and songs. But unlike the most recent of the tiny music players, the new $49 device brings back the square shape and buttons of Apple's second-generation Shuffle.

Earlier, Jobs also said iPhone users will be getting a software update that offers the ability to upload HD video over Wi-Fi. And when people take photos, the new software will save three slightly different copies that, when combined, make for a sharper image.

The new software is version 4.1 of the iOS system. It will be available next week for free, initially for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch.

    • Feeling the pain from TIVO yet? The worst has yet to come. US is in recession. More job losses. Save money for raining days ahead.

    • Loser!!!

    • You "ARE" one of the "SMARTEST" lady that I ever come across on any message board that I visited in my life. other then item #14 (House are to live in and not an investments) between 1987 - 2003 My wife and I purchased 5 properties in San Francisco. All those properties were all purchased with a heafty down payment, so right of the bat, they were generating positive cash flow. Besides that, they are a good source for tax write off, and even as bad as the current housing market, and if we decided to sell any one of them, we will (atlease) triple from what we originally paid for them. By the way, I don't agreed with your "strong sell" sentiment on TIVO. Currently My sentiment on TIVO is "HOLD" at best. But, I think the pps on TIVO is going to get worse before it gets better. Bottom line, You are a bright lady, and I bet you are a smart investor. Good Luck, best wishes and Godbless. And have a nice weekend!
